Plants have always traversed seas, intentionally and inadvertently.
In Shipping Roots, artist Keg de Souza draws on RBGE’s collections to tell tales of eucalyptus, prickly pear and ‘alien’ seeds, tracing legacies through the British Empire and specifically linking Australia, India and the UK. These stories relate to the artist’s own cultural removal, drawn from her lived experiences as a person of Goan heritage whose ancestral lands were colonised, to living as a settler on unceded Gadigal land in Sydney.
This exhibition tour is specifically designed for people with a visual impairment and led by John Cummings. Please book your ticket in advance and meet on the day at the welcome desk in the John Hope Gateway (at the west side of the Garden, on Arboretum Place). The tour will be followed by a creative workshop inspired by the exhibition, led by Edinburgh Art Festival.
