Edinburgh Art Festival is a unique celebration of the visual arts, delivered in partnership with the city’s leading galleries, museums and artist-run spaces. Founded in 2004, we are the youngest of Edinburgh’s summer festivals, and over the past ten years we have grown to become the UK’s largest annual festival of visual art. 90% of our programme is free to attend and we are committed to engaging new audiences from all walks of life.

We engage new audiences with the visual arts, support artists to deliver ambitious projects and encourage rich debate amongst local communities about culture and heritage in our city. Through an annual programme of exhibitions, publicly sited commissions and events, we ensure visual art has a prominent place in the lives of Edinburgh citizens and festival visitors alike. With venues ranging from a burnt out watchtower to Waverley train station, our commissions programme takes art out of the gallery and into public spaces, offering chance encounters with the very best of visual art.
We are one of very few organisations who continue to directly support artists to make new work to be shown outwith the gallery environment, ensuring Edinburgh specifically and Scotland more widely is an exciting place for artists at all stages of their career to live and work. Since 2012, we have directly commissioned nearly 50 artists – from Turner Prize winners to recent graduates - to produce ambitious new work for the festival, a significant investment which has benefitted not just the artists themselves but has contributed to the overall investment in new art in the UK generally.
