Overview
Christian Boltanski will present two installations in The Steadings Gallery and The Goldsworthy Room alongside a new permanent, outdoor installation. Shadow Theatres (Sombras) is a series developed by the artist across different moments since 1984. Each of Boltanski’s theatres is a phantasmagoria. Metallic figurines are projected upon the gallery walls, which are materialized through their movement as they twitch in and out of focus as if relating to a dream like ritual. The kaleidoscopic presentation of light, shadows and sounds further depicts skeletal figurines typically used in cultures across the world as a remark or celebration of death.
Les Archives du Coeur is a collection of recorded heartbeats that the artist has been gathering since 2008 and is housed on the uninhabited Japanese Island of Teshima. This acclaimed installation at Jupiter Artland and will offer visitors the opportunity to record their heartbeat to be submitted to the archive.
Animitas is comprised of hundreds of small Japanese bells attached to long stems planted in the ground. The bells chiming to the wind let out the “music of the souls”. Each bell will be placed on the island within the duck pond to reproduce the map of the stars on the night the artist was born, 6th September 1944. The title of the piece refers to the altars that Chilean Native Indians put on the side of the road to honour the dead. The artist believes their spirits surrounds us and that the bells in his piece mimic the gestures of the dead.
