Overview
This major exhibition is an ambitious display of masterpieces from the Impressionist era. Featuring over 100 pictures, from collections around the world, Inspiring Impressionism focuses on three key artists:
Charles François Daubigny (1817—1878), the ‘Father of Impressionism’, a hitherto-overlooked painter, who inspired and supported many of the young Impressionists.
Claude Monet (1840—1926), the most famous of the group, who epitomised Impressionism through his evocations of changing light and atmosphere.
Vincent van Gogh (1853—1890), the legendary post-Impressionist artist, whose brightly-coloured paintings of orchards and wheatfields took inspiration from Daubigny and the Impressionists.
Through a series of fascinating and surprising juxtapositions, this landmark show highlights the interactions and mutual influence between these three artists.
This exhibition is organized by the National Galleries of Scotland in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and the Taft Museum of Art, Cincinnati. Exhibition sponsored by EY.
