In 1853, John Ruskin criticised a painting of street urchins by Murillo, then the best-known Spanish Old Master. Dr Hilary Macartney, Honorary Research Fellow, University of Glasgow, examines some of his paintings which made–and broke–his critical esteem in Britain.
