Melvin Moti: One Thousand Points of Light
20 July – 21 October 2012
One Thousand Points of Light is Dutch artist Melvin Moti’s first UK solo show.
Working with UV light emitting rocks from the mineralogy collections at National Museums Scotland, Moti has made a stunning film that induces feelings of either flying through space or looking down a microscope, immersing the viewer in the uncanny beauty of these luminous objects by removing any sense of their physical scale.
Moti considers that rocks are in some way communicating directly by absorbing UV light, changing it and emitting visible light in vivid colours. Alongside his film, Moti has brought together an extremely diverse range of other objects from the museum’s collection, all of which communicate through their material qualities - including scent bottles made with Uranium glass, dried scorpions, millions of years old fossils and jellyfish suspended in spirit.
The exhibition is supported by Creative Scotland with additional support from the Mondriaan Fund.
