Since 1947 Edinburgh has developed a strong tradition of high profile and landmark exhibitions and visual arts events. Even before the first Festival, there was an exhibition of the King’s pictures at the Royal Scottish Academy. A succession of significant exhibitions followed - the French artists, Bonnard and Vuillard in 1948, a retrospective of the three Scottish Colourists, Peploe, Cadell and Hunter in 1949, and Rembrandt in 1950.

Continuing in this tradition EAF works in partnership to create a sum greater than all its parts, presenting work by international and Scottish artists in a wide variety of settings. Last year we welcomed Ingleby Gallery’s new space along with the re-appearance of Dovecot, as well as other new initiatives such as the Garden Gallery which presented in a series of open-air environments. In fact there was plenty of opportunity to take in the city by choosing to see all the site-specific art on offer.
