Surface

American artist Lauren Kirkman uses granite cobblestones to create a striking, large-scale installation of a section of an Edinburgh road which mirrors the road outside. Kirkman’s work focuses on the world beneath our feet and questions the awareness and attention we give to our urban infrastructure. She is interested in how a surface acts as the interface between the object and its viewer and how the surface of an object masks everything which lies beneath.

Her road installation will be accompanied by a collection of stunning prints and abstract rubbings of manhole covers and gaswork covers taken from the streets of London. This is Kirkman’s first solo show in Scotland. She graduated in 2005 with an MFA in Sculpture and recently she has exhibited in Notlob at Terrace Studios and The Dream of Reason at Temporary Contemporary, London.
