well, WellMoyna Flannigan is celebrated for her paintings: frequently portraits of fictitious individuals, who appear to inhabit an intriguingly surreal, interior world. In a new series of oil paintings and works on paper, Flannigan moves into fantastical new territory. In her new work, inspired by the works of Goya, Bacon, Hogarth and Gillray through to the films of Fellini and Orson Welles and current global politics, Flannigan melds together fantasy with an undertow of both slapstick and social commentary. Plucking pictorial conventions from art history – fallen heroes, allegory and vanitas portraiture – Flannigan’s imagination and pictorial invention points towards another kind of reality. well, Well is Moyna Flannigan’s first solo show in Scotland since her highly acclaimed exhibition of portrait miniatures at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 2004.
