Van Gogh & Britain: Pioneer Collectors

Neglected in his own lifetime, Van Gogh’s paintings now fetch millions at auction. This exhibition – the largest Van Gogh show in Britain for forty years – looks at the early, pioneer collectors of Van Gogh and tells the story of how his pictures ended up on British soil.

A representative selection of over thirty works will be on show from throughout his brief career such as Portrait of Alexander Reid (1887), the Glasgow dealer who shared an apartment with Van Gogh in Paris; A Wheatfield, with Cypresses, painted in 1889 after Van Gogh cut off his ear lobe and admitted himself to a psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy; and Rain – Auvers (1890), completed only a few days before his tragic suicide. Advance booking essential.
