John Houston: New Paintings

Houston has quietly emerged as one of the great landscape painters of his generation. His bold, unerring colour sense and gestural style of oil painting mark him out. In watercolour he is nearer in spirit to Gillies, his tutor at Edinburgh College of art in the 1950s, using a wet technique and often celebrating the subtle effects of weather on the land and sea. He first showed at the Festival in 1962 and forty-five years later, an unbroken period of collaboration and development, he shows again, with sixty new works in both media restating his purpose and reinforcing his status as one of Scotland’s greatest painters.
