Art Late
Edinburgh Art Festival, Reading Room, Stills2 tours, 3 hours, 10 specially created events, 14 galleries, 28 artists.
Join the Edinburgh Art Festival for Scotland’s only city-wide late night gallery openings.
Following last years successful event, Art Late returns with another diverse programme of exhibitions, live performances, screenings and tours staged by an array of Scottish and international artists. Art Late is commissioned as one final night of fun - a festival fling – to draw to a close another successful year of the Edinburgh Art Festival.
Art Late has a series of specially commissioned new works for the event; a participatory reading by Elspeth Murray and JL Williams, drawn from their highlights of the Martha Rosler Library, musical performances by Withered Hand (Dan Wilson) and Paul Vickers & The Leg and two Art Late walking tours created and led by Edinburgh artists. These tours will draw visitors around a series of galleries and provide a refreshing and entertaining opportunity to experience, participate and appreciate the works from a new perspective.
The Art Late Timetable
6 pm - The whole evenings events kick off at Stills. You are invited to a specially commissioned reading by Elspeth Murray and JL Williams of their highlights from Martha Rosler Library.
6.45pm - Choose to set off on a tour with guides Tessa Lynch and Shona Handley or Steve Mykietyn, or a select from a smorgasbord of 14 exhibitions and 10 specially created events.
8pm - Tours end at the Ingleby Gallery where Paul Vickers and the Leg will play at 8:30.
9pm – Art Late Events draw to a close.
EXHIBITIONS TOURS
The Giving Tour - Tessa Lynch and Shona Handley ‘Giving’ will be an important part of Tessa and Shona’s tour. They will to take visitors on a tour where gifts will be revealed and created, all in the context of the exhibitions, and have designed the tour to open new levels of insight into the work in the exhibitions. The tour will include visits to Stills, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Bourne Fine Art, Grey Gallery and Ingleby Gallery.
The Running Tour - Steve Mykietyn
Strap on your running shoes for Steve’s whirlwind tour of some of the highlights of the Art Festival - we’re serious, comfy shoes are a must! Filled with useful information and insight into the galleries, artists and buildings of Edinburgh, this tour is ideal for those who want a glimpse at an abridged version of the Art Festival. The Running Tour will whiz through Stills, Advocate’s Close, Collective, Atticsalt, Doggerfisher, Edinburgh Printmakers and will conclude at Ingleby Gallery.
Musical Performances
Withered Hand is the musical alter ego of artist Dan Wilson. Dan has exhibited his graphic work around the UK and abroad, is currently involved in the Golden Record Sounds of the Earth exhibition, and will be performing acoustically within the exhibition at Collective Gallery on the night.
Paul Vickers & The Leg - Paul Vickers is an experienced musican and composer. As member of cult group Dawn Of The Replicants Paul has five album releases and a number of legendary Peel Sessions to his credit. Accompanied by The Leg, themselves lauded by the likes of Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley, they will play a live set from 8.30pm at the Ingleby Gallery, partly as an homage to the buildings previous incarnation as the famous live music mecca The Venue.
These newly commissioned pieces are only a fraction of the work available to experience throughout the evening. Other highlights of the exhibitions, performances and tours include live visuals and sound from Close Up at Advocates Close, the films of Alexander Heim at Doggerfisher, unveil the mystery behind Chad McCail’s screenprints at Edinburgh Printmakers, tour behind the scenes at the Dovecot Studios, a newly renovated Victorian Baths, opening its back door for the very first time since the renovations were initiated!, Live fiddle playing from BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year finalist Mike Vass at Patriothall Gallery.
There will also be a chance to marvel at the unsolicited information sensation that is Spam The Musical at the Voodoo Rooms, a show that has been specially created for EAF by a group of anonymous young artists.
Put simply, Art Late is a fantastic one-off opportunity to see & enjoy an event spread over multiple venues and including new work created by Edinburgh artists. Join with the EAF as it lets its hair down and puts the arty back into party.
