MAGAZINE 08 Positive Critical Imagination

Curators: Javier Marroquí and David Arlandis

This year, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop has commissioned Spanish curatorial team, Javier Marroquí and David Arlandis to steer its annual exhibition, MAGAZINE.

Positive Critical Imagination is based on mapping and spreading certain social and cultural practices that can be included in the concept ‘Positive Critical Potentials’ that the curators have been exploring for three years. The common denominator of this kind of practice is the capacity for critical action that overcomes social and political complaint in order to dedicate itself to the proposal of social alternatives, to the construction of new action methods.

The exhibition, which is accompanied by related events aimed at encouraging critical thinking, brings together the proposals of Superflex and Copenhagen Brains, Elske Rosenfeld, Big Hope, Oliver Ressler, Andreja Kuluncic, Recetas Urbanas, Wochenklausur, Société Réaliste and Marta de Gonzalo & Publio Pérez Prieto. Through their work, they explore social and political concerns looking at the possibility of an alternative and to erase and replace the image of necessity and normalcy of today’s social order.

Javier Marroquí and David Arlandis began to work together at the University of Valencia in 2002. Since then, they have formed a cultural working group focussing on art criticism and curatorial practice.
