Hugh Brady – 39

16B Lennox Street Lane, Edinburgh, EH4 1PZ. 07973 629669

39

For this exhibition Hugh Brady has transformed his studio, a former stables building, into a conduit for a variety of spaces occupied by other artists, both fictional and real. Drawing upon a diverse range of references, 39 comprises a series of paintings, murals, drawings and architectural interventions, which operate in a transitional state between private studio, public exhibition and film set.

Like the notion of the ‘artist’s studio,’ sitespecific and contextled exhibitions have become established ideas with their own attendant clichés. In using his own work space as subject and context of the installation, Brady has turned this approach to artmaking in on itself, in a recursive structure. By merging new work with existing imagery and architectural details, the installation creates a complex network of allusions and associations which address the contingent and schizophrenic nature of artistic production.
