Ingleby Gallery – Kay Rosen: Huen
15 Calton Road, Edinburgh, EH8 8DL. 0131 556 4441Kay Rosen: Huen
The inaugural exhibition at Ingleby Gallery’s new space will be the first Scottish showing of work by American artist Kay Rosen.
Rosen has been exploring the possibilities of words as images for over 25 years. She delights in the small shift; the subtle change that subverts meaning and reveals the unexpected.
In her paintings, drawings, wall works, collages and editions she has used varied visual, grammatical, and typographical strategies to challenge the way people see and understand the words they read. For someone whose ammunition is the painted word she is also a very visual artist, using colour to articulate her ideas in a way that is often humorous, sometimes shocking, and frequently profound.
Also showing Susan Collis
This is Susan Collis’ first solo exhibition in Scotland. Though it might look at first to be the aftermath of a previous show, or the halffinished installation of her own, closer scrutiny reveals that the wall screws are actually solid gold, their rawl plugs precious turquoise and coral; the dusty broom in the corner has been set with opals, and the white paint drips on the floorboards are really inlaid motherofpearl. Trompe l’oeil is not usually employed for such humble things, and the poetry of Collis’ work lies in the intense labour spent crafting these precious and beautiful, but ultimately useless objects.
Closes 24 September.
