Based on the texts of email spam, SPAM the Musical is about makebelieve and truth, hope and betrayal. Having collected email spam for over two years, the artist turns spam into video art and video art into art spam.
Just as spam email is uninvited so the guerrilla screenings of SPAM the Musical are viewed by chance encounters at unnamed locations throughout the city. Whilst in the streets of Edinburgh, festival goers, office workers and shoppers alike are confronted with SPAM the Musical, as more footage is simultaneously uploaded online, viruslike, onto over a hundred international video platforms. Intended to create the biggest art spam in the world, the videos and the webpage they link to ask each viewer to forward the videos to every curator, gallery, and museum they know.
The artist has worked with a group of nearly a dozen Melbourne artists including renowned composers and sopranos, video and mixed media artists, and new talents currently studying art, music or drama at VCA and Monash to create a unique project that stretches genre limits and plays with the viewer’s mind.
The world premiere of SPAM the Musical is presented by New Media Scotland courtesy of Herrmann & Wagner, Berlin.
