Andrew Gannon, Balancing on the Skirting, 2013

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop will present new works from three different strands of its residency and curatorial programmes during the festival.

A solo show by Kate Owens will present an ambitious new installation and live public performance, the basis of which is a script adapted from a children’s book first published in Britain in 1954. An acutely observed tale of curious logic and creative thinking, the novel's plot appears to be led by the spontaneous experiences of its characters. Transcribed as a script, the text occupies an indefinite position between directions for a stage play and a loose proposal for a creative workshop.

Increasingly performative in nature, Andrew Gannon's practice remains elusive to easy classification - here he presents new works developed during a residency at ESW. The artist's recent works focus on ideas of lightness and of making something from nothing, exploring how close to nothing something can be and how failure can offer a method for exploring the world.

Modern Edinburgh Film School is a temporary participatory film school, combining themes of the sculptural screen, film and poetry, narrative and space, event as image and acoustics as noise and form. Curated by Alex Hetherington in association with Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, this exhibition represents the school's final instalment and will include works from a range of visual arts practitioners responding to the overlapping themes of the project.

A series of documents and essays commissioned by Modern Edinburgh Film School will be available, charting the ideas and activities generated in screenings, exhibitions and talks held at supporting organisations including Embassy and New Media Scotland during the project's six month lifecycle.
