Parley Discussion: Real Life Parledonia (curated by Ross Sinclair)

Artist Ross Sinclair adopts the role of ring master to direct a loose array of speakers, performers and artists, in debating questions such as: 'what is Parley? And what is Caledonia? And how might they come together locally, nationally and internationally? What is the job description of 'artists' in a small damp Northern European country in 2013? What is a 'creative life' and how can the idea be articulated by ourselves and others at this particularly complicated moment in time?'.

This event will be in Edinburgh College of Art's Sculpture Court.

Drop in Holiday Workshops

Morning session 10am–12 noon, afternoon session 1–3pm

£6 per session inclusive of entry into Jupiter Artland for the child only, booking recommended.

Two hour sessions designed to engage kids with the artland in a bite size way. They run throughout the summer and each session has it’s own theme ranging from build your own Charles Jencks land forms to a “Purple Haze” painting workshop inspired by Anya Gallacio’s crystal cave.

Suitable for 5 to 13 year olds - teaching will be in age appropriate groups.

'Round about the Cauldron': The Witchcraft Scenes of Salvator Rosa

Salvator Rosa's witchcraft scenes are among the strangest and most bizarre of 17th-century paintings. Dr Helen Langdon, curator of the exhibition Salvator Rosa; Bandits, Wilderness and Magic at Dulwich Picture Gallery, 2010, explores how they may be read; as parody or satire; as part of a Florentine literary taste for the macabre and astonishing; or as dark works that suggest the social realities and obsessive fears of baroque Italy. 

This event will take place in Hawthornden Lecture Theatre.

Parley for Power

Based in a world where cats and dogs engage in wild debate over issues of identity and independence. A vote will determine whether they rid themselves of the moniker of 'pet' and all associated ties to their petitude. 

Parley for Power is a short play written for the festival by poet Michael Pedersen (Neu! Reekie!) and award-winning playwright/novelist Alan Bissett. 

Performed alongside visuals and puppets crafted by artist Carla Easton and with music written and performed by Easton (TeenCanteen) and Eugene Kelly (of indie legends The Vaselines).

Parley for Power promises humour, pathos, a potpourri of philosophy, plus the odd dash of something political. 

This performance will be in Edinburgh College of Art's Sculpture Court.

Preview: The Complaints Choir and Kenny Watson

A drinks reception for two of this year's commissions: The Complaints Choir of Edinburgh and Kenny Watson's The Days & Fascia.

This is a chance to see work by artist Kenny Watson including Days, the result of over 12 months spent painstakingly amassing individual posters from newspaper vendors around the city.

The event will include a live performance by The Complaints Choir of Edinburgh and also the chance to see the video installation The Complaints Choir.

EAF Guided tours

We'll be running a series of free guided tours throughout the festival - join us for a great way to sample a variety of different works on show and discover new artists. Tours will focus on different aspects of the exhibitions and on different parts of the city. 

Tours will depart from 169 Rose Street.

This is the site of Kenny Watson's The Days & Fascia  and an installation of the first UK showing of Kalleinen and Kalleinen’s The Complaints Choir, a four channel video installation documenting the nine Complaints Choirs created and led by the artists themselves.

EAF Explorers

Designed for children and families, EAF Explorers is a special activity trail through the art festival. Pick up your free EAF Explorers passport and map from participating galleries and learn about some of the art on show by completing a series of fun, creative activities. Complete each activity and get your passport stamped at each gallery, then show us your stamped passport at Sarah Kenchington's Windpipes for Edinburgh at Trinity Apse to receive a special prize.

Tourists in Residence 2013: The Self-Guided Tour

The Selected Monuments of Edinburgh map can be downloaded.

This year's Tourists in Residence, artists Tom Nolan and Catherine Payton, have created Selected Monuments of Edinburgh, an Edinburgh map, from the unique perspective of artists based in the city. This is a self-directed tour so that you can make your way around the city of Edinburgh in your own time. 

This year's Tourists in Residence have also created the following guided tours: The Debtor's Day Off (11 August & 1 September), A dissociative walk and A symposium (with free tea and coffee).
