Gavin Hipkins

Gavin Hipkins is an Auckland-based artist who works with photography and film. He has been described as a ‘tourist of photography’ reflecting a strategic treatment of eclectic historic styles and photographic techniques. Hipkins holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and Bachelor of Fine Arts (Photography) from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland.

 

Hipkins represented New Zealand at the 1998 Sydney Biennale and the 2002 Sao Paulo Biennale. He has exhibited widely in New Zealand and Australia and his works have been included in major curated exhibitions in the USA, UK, Germany, Austria, Brazil, and Italy including: Austrian Museum of Applied Art and Contemporary Art (MAK), Vienna, 2011; Tell Me a Story: Narrative Photography Now, San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, California, 2007; Picturing Eden, International Museum of Photography and Film at George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, 2006; Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, 2004; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 2000; Palazzo Re Rebaudengo, Guarene d’ Alba, 2000.
