Mary Evans, Held, 2012, craft paper, installation view, photograph by R Abudu
Over the past two decades, Mary Evans has established a reputation for producing powerful and equally evocative mixed media installation works, which explore and reflect on the impact of tragic and brutal moments in history. Often using the legacy of transatlantic slavery as her starting point, Evan’s work creates memorable images and environments imbued with a sense of humanity, empathy and personal investment. The recent work, Held (2012) originated from research undertaken for an earlier work, Hold (2006) by the artist in Ghana where she visited the once notorious slave trading posts, Elmina and Cape Coast castles. Held is a powerful installation comprising tableaux silhouetted figures and architecture, made from brown paper cut outs.
Evans has exhibited nationally and internationally in exhibitions including Art Dubai, Dubai, UAE; Paper Bag, Cafe Gallery Projects, London, in 2013; The Ties That Bind Us, Tiwani Contemporary London; Camberwell Arts Festival, London; Condretum, Dilston Grove, London 2011; Rummage, Cafe Gallery Projects, London, 2009; 3rd Guangzhou Triennial, Guangzhou China; 2008. Meditations, Baltimore Museum of Art , Baltimore USA, 2008; Scope, Café Gallery Projects, London, 2001; Filter, Leighton House Museum, London, 1997.
